Near Ortahisar, Red Valley is famous for its tuff rocks that turn shades of red and orange at sunset. Formed by ancient volcanic activity and shaped by wind and rain, the valley offers a spectacular color display, most dramatic in the evening light. Throughout the day, the rocks shift in tone, but sunset reveals their most vibrant hues.
The valley has a network of easy to moderate hiking trails leading to rock-carved churches and ancient dwellings. Along the paths, visitors encounter the Üzümlü Church, old cave houses, and the remains of collapsed chapels. Red Valley is widely regarded as one of Cappadocia’s best sunset viewpoints.
From the high terrace, you can watch the sun dip behind the silhouette of Ortahisar, with Uçhisar Castle and even Mount Erciyes visible on clear days. The glowing sky makes this one of the most photographed landscapes in Cappadocia, particularly popular for wedding and keepsake photos.
The main viewing terrace provides a wide 360° panorama, with a few benches and an open platform. As the sun sets, the rocks glow in golden and crimson tones perfect for professional and amateur photographers alike. Since the colors shift throughout the day, visiting at different times can reward you with unique shots.
Besides sunset viewing, the valley is popular for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. In the early morning, hot air balloons rise over the valley, creating an unforgettable scene when combined with the dramatic landscape.
