According to local folklore, a beautiful princess from Cappadocia fell in love with a humble shepherd. When her royal father forbade the union, the couple fled the palace and had a child together. Enraged, the king pursued them. In desperation, the princess embraced her child and prayed to be protected. Her plea was answered they were all turned into stone. Today, the three chimneys are said to represent the shepherd in front, the child in the middle, and the princess behind.

Locals believe that childless couples who walk the nearby hill seven times while making a wish may be blessed with a child adding a spiritual dimension to this natural site.

From a scientific perspective, the formations are the result of erosion over millions of years. Layers of soft volcanic tuff, deposited by ancient eruptions from Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan, were sculpted by wind and water. The harder basalt caps on top slowed erosion underneath, allowing the columns to remain standing while the surrounding material wore away.
